Hexamania.io is a small .io-style game about little hexagon characters getting bigger and bigger! Shoot down your foes with your rifle or use your spells on them, and merge their heart with your body to become bigger and stronger!

CONTROLS:

- WASD / Arrow Keys to move

- Left Click to shoot with your rifle

- Right Click to open/close the spell menu. (from there, scroll to the spell you like, and Left Click to activate it)

- Left Shift to sprint

- Left Control to open the analysis menu

BREAKDOWN:

You start out with 2 hexagons and a rifle. After finding an enemy and killing them, they drop their heart, which can either be a spell or upgrade*. Upon collecting a heart, the player merges with it, becoming stronger. The player and enemies can form a maximum of three shells of hexagons around them. There is no winning, the player must try to survive as long as possible.

SPELLS:

Spells appear as little hexagons with nothing in them. Depending on the color, they allow the player to perform a special action. For example: Fireball, which is orange, will shoot out a fireball in the direction of the mouse! The player will only be able to perform a spell that's stuck on their body. The available spells are:

- Health Pad (green): throws a pad on top of the player, if the player is on the pad, they will be healed by some amount of health every second.

- Ice Ball (blue): throws a ball of ice in the direction of the mouse that immediately freezes every enemy it touches and pierces through them. Frozen enemies cannot move or shoot with their rifle.

- Fireball (orange): throws a ball of fire in the direction of the mouse that, when hit on an enemy, creates an explosion. The explosion deals a good amount of damage to the enemy, and sets both them and nearby enemies into fire. Enemies of fire lose some health every second.

- Black Hole (purple): throws a black hole in the direction of the mouse. All enemies within a certain radius are sucked to the black hole. Enemies that are touching or close to touching it cannot shoot with their rifle.

Spells have a 25 second cooldown after every use. This cannot be reduced.

If an enemy owns a spell the player doesn't have, they are guaranteed to drop it upon death.

UPGRADES:

Upgrades also appear as little hexagons, but with a symbol in them. They give a certain buff to one of the player's spells or the rifle. The spell the upgrade buffs matches its color (gray is for the rifle). Each spell and the rifle have 3 seperate upgrades. The player cannot have more than 3 of the same upgrade.

POWERUPS:

Powerups appear as little circles with a symbol in them. Powerups spawn randomly around the map, and give a temporary buff to the player. The available powerups are:

- Health (red): gives the player a random amount of health.

- Damage (orange): gives the player a damage boost for 10 seconds.

- Speed (blue): increases the player's maximum speed for 10 seconds.

Active powerups (either damage or speed, as health is used up immediately) are visible above the map.

* Enemies drop powerups if they have no valid drops. This could happen if the player has reached the maximum amount of hexagons, or if the only available drops are spells that the player has, or upgrades that the player has 3 of.

MAP:

A map can be used to find things that may not be clearly visible, or out of the player's field of view.

- The blue dot indicates the player's position (relative to the camera).

- The blue square indicates the player's field of view.

- Red dots indicate enemies.

- Pink dots indicate dropped hearts.

- Green dots indicate powerups.

ANALYSIS:

An analysis menu can be opened (by pressing Left Control) that details stats about the rifle and every spell the player has.

SPECIAL THANKS:

grace4shcroft: for playtesting the game and giving me ideas for the spells!

- nickthegreek0749_36814: for playtesting and helping with the balancing!

- raysan5: for making such an awesome library!

This is my first game jam submission, I ended up enjoying it a lot, even if it was pretty difficult and I came unprepared. I posted my full thoughts on my GitHub, and I also posted the roadmap, detailing what I did each day!

SOME TECHNICAL INFO:

The game was made using Odin and a modified version of Karl Zylinski's odin+raylib+web template.

All art was made in Inkscape, as vector art.

Music was made in the Reaper DAW.

AI Disclosure: I used ChatGPT a little bit to help me out with the math stuff (like hexagon positioning and rotations). Apart from that, no AI was used in the making of this game!

Note: insta-crash bug is fixed! (probably)
